Pepper prices rise further this week. Significant increase was recorded in Vietnam from VND 152,500 per mt last week to VND 164,500 this week for black pepper. White pepper also increased from VND 197,500 per kg to VND 212,500 this week. The increase reflected that stock in Vietnam has limited; while upcoming crop in Lampung in August is anticipated to be significantly lower. In Lampung and India the price also increased. In dollar terms however, local price in Kochi decreased due weakening of Indian Rupees against US Dollar. In Sarawak and Sri Lanka the price were reported stable.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY SPAIN:
During 2013 Spain imported 10,100 mt of pepper comprising 8,601 mt of whole pepper and 1,499 mt of ground pepper, an increase of 19% when compared to import of 8,515 mt in 2012. Import of pepper by Spain increased from year to year, particularly in the last three years. During last decade (2001 - 2010) average quantity of pepper imported by Spain was around 8,000 mt. In the last three years the import has increased from significantly from 6,860 mt in 2010 to 10,100 mt in 2013. Import of ground pepper increased consistently from 490 mt in 2001 to 1,500 mt in 2013. Vietnam and Brazil were the main sources of whole pepper, while ground pepper was mainly from India.
