The market showed a mixed response during this week. In Indonesia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, the price has increased further; while in India the price trend showed a decrease, may be due to the harvest has started. In Lampung, local price of black pepper increased marginally by IDR 1,000 per kg. A higher increase was recorded for white pepper in Bangka and black pepper in Sri Lanka by 3% each. In Sarawak a marginal increase were also recorded for black and white. In Vietnam, local price of black pepper decreased marginally, but on an average, the price was still higher by 1% compared to last week. In the case of Vietnamese white pepper, the price increased by 3%. In Sri Lanka, an increase of 3% was also recorded.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY THE UNITED STATES:
In October 2013 import of pepper into the United States increased to 7,350 mt from 6,041 mt in September and 5,314 in August this year. Compared to import in October last year the import was also higher. During January - October 2013 the United States has imported 59,592 mt of pepper, comprising of 42,584 mt of black, 5,015 mt of white and 11,993 mt of ground pepper. When compared to imports in the same period last year, import up to October increased by 10,550 mt (21%). Import of black pepper increased 25%.Import of white and ground pepper also increased at a lower rate of 11% and 15% respectively. Vietnam, Indonesia and Brazil were the main source of pepper for the United States, supplying about 90%. In the case of white pepper, Indonesia and Vietnam also dominated the market, supplying about 93%; while import of ground pepper was mainly from India and Vietnam. During 2013, import of pepper into the United States is estimated to cross the level of 70,000 mt.
