Pepper market continued to show mixed response during this week. In India and Sri Lanka black pepper prices decreased; while in Lampung, Sarawak and Vietnam, prices increased. Although Malabar pepper prices decreased further but remained the highest so far. The decrease of Malabar pepper is most likely due to anticipation of good harvest in India by early 2015. Due to very tight stock in Lampung, Vietnam and Sarawak, marginal price increases in those sources was recorded. In terms of white pepper, the market was stronger. In Bangka and Vietnam, local price of white pepper increased by 8%, while FOB price increased up to 5%. In Sarawak, price was relatively stable.

IMPORT OF PEPPER BY THE UNITED KINGDOM:
United Kingdom is one of the important markets for pepper in Europe. During the last decade import of pepper into the United Kingdom increased over 100% from 5,500Mt in 2004 to 13,000Mt in 2013. It is interesting to note that, import of ground pepper increased while the import of whole pepper remains more or less the same. In 2014, import of pepper to the United Kingdom is estimated be slightly lower, as indicated by import figures during the first ten months. During January to October 2014 import of pepper into United Kingdom was 8,435 Mt as against 9,973 Mt in the same period in previous year. The decrease was in line with the decrease in the global supply of pepper during this year.
