World Pepper Situation - 2014

In the 41st Session of the IPC, held in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, 11-13 November 2013, the member countries had a detailed deliberation on the total production, exports, etc. and adopted the details on estimation for the year 2013 and projection for 2014. The details are furnished below:

From the above details it may be noted that a decrease in production by 6,300 MT during 2014 is projected, due to anticipated drastic fall of production in India; whereas the domestic consumption is expected to be higher than last year. Hence export and stock carry over would be lower. Under this scenario, the price is expected to remain high till the new crop from Vietnam arrives the market.

During the last three years pepper market was very dynamic and prices stood at high level as shown in the price chart. In October 2011, price of pepper recorded the highest so far. By the end of December 2013 also the price again recorded the highest during the last two years. Since 2012 and up to middle of 2013, pepper prices fluctuated at narrow ranges. In the second half of 2013 the prices again shoot up sharply to $4.1 per pound for black and $5.75 for white pepper in December end in New York as against $3.9 and $5.86 per pound respectively for black and white pepper in Oct. 2011.
