The market was firmer and prices rebounded at most origins this week. Activities however limited, except in Vietnam which is now in the peak of harvesting season. Pepper price prevailing in Vietnam during the week increased by VND 1,000 per kg from VND 125,500 per kg for black last week; while for white pepper increased significantly by VND 11,500 per kg to VND 182,500 per kg. Local prices of pepper in Kochi (India), Sarawak (Malaysia) and Bangka (Indonesia) have also increased. Price increase was also recorded in Europe and New York; while in Lampung and Sri Lanka the prices were reported stable.
EXPORT OF PEPPER FROM MALAYSIA:
Malaysia exported 544 mt of pepper (442 mt of black and 102 mt of white pepper) in February 2014 as against 794 mt of export in February 2013 and 1,046 mt in the previous month (January 2014). During the last six months export of pepper from Malaysia experienced a decreasing trend from 1,437 mt in September 2013. The continuous decrease reflected that supply from Malaysia is currently limited.
