Pepper markets showed a mixed response during the week. In most of the producing countries the markets continued to be stronger, except in Kochi and Sarawak, where the market has decreased. Although Indonesian rupiah has been in a downward spiral, local pepper prices have raised in tandem. In Lampung, black pepper price increased to IDR 67,500 per kg during this week from IDR 65,000 at the last week-s close. In Bangka, during this week the white pepper price increased from IDR 87,500 to IDR 92,500 per kg. Price increase was also recorded in Brazil, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. It was reported that Vietnam has already sold 75-80% of its crop this year and the remaining inventory will be tightly controlled. Malabar has not been a factor for several months. Currently, the market is watching on the development of pepper production in Brazil, which is expected to be harvested in September. According to some sources, production of pepper in Brazil this year is expected to be more or less same as last year.

EXPORT OF PEPPER FROM INDONESIA During 2012, export of black pepper from Indonesia was 49,500 mt. Out of this a volume of 43,225 mt were shipped from Lampung. Compared to export in the previous year, the increase was more than double. In 2013 however, export of black pepper from Lampung is estimated to be lower, following a significant decline in the production during the year. During January - July 2013, pepper export from Lampung was only 8,000 mt as against 12,000 mt in the same period last year. The monthly export of pepper has decreased continuously from 2,253 mt in January to 526 and 324 mt in May and June 2013 respectively. Given the availability of material from current harvest, export of black pepper in July has increased to 2,576 mt, but still lower compared to 3,675 mt exported in July 2012.
