WPB Week #26/13, 24 - 28 June 2013
The market showed a mixed response during the week. Local prices in India, Brazil, and Sarawak increased. In Lampung and Vietnam the price was stable, while in Sri Lanka decreased marginally. In dollar terms, local price in Vietnam decreased marginally, due to weakening of local currency against US Dollar. Trading activity was reportedly limited. The buyers are still cautious to bid price, anticipating crop development in Indonesia. Since major share of pepper berries from the pass crop season in Vietnam has been released, crop development in Indonesia, particularly in Lampung become the main factor influencing market direction in the second half of this year. As reported earlier, production of pepper in Indonesia would be lower this year. Some sources reported that significant fall will take place in Lampung. In addition of the above, the announcement by government of Indonesia on a substantial reduction in fuel subside has resulted rising price of goods and services, which is ultimately will increase processing cost for pepper. Under the above situation, expecting to have material at lower price would be difficult.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY THE NETHERLANDS:
Netherlands as one of the important pepper trading countries in Europe imported 16.506 mt of pepper in 2012, comprising 12,895 mt of whole pepper and 3,611 mt of ground pepper, as against 15,086 mt imported in 2011 Major portion of pepper imported by the Netherlands was for re-export to the neighboring countries in EU. Up to March 2013, total import of Netherlands was around 3,500 mt (2,650 mt of whole pepper and 850 mt of ground pepper) which was 18% lower when compared to import in the corresponding period last year. Import of ground pepper increased marginally, while for whole pepper decreased. Vietnam was the most important pepper supplier for Netherlands followed by Brazil and Indonesia.
