MARKET REPORT
Market this week showed a mixed response with a rather stable outlook as only India and Sri Lanka origin were reported with an increase. In local market, Malabar black pepper was traded with an increase of 2% as compared to the previous week with an average of USD 4,468 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper was reported stable at an average of USD 1,749 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,134 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysian black and white pepper were traded domestically with a 2% deficit respectively as opposed to the previous week averaging at USD 1,778 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,190 per Mt for white pepper. Furthermore, Viet Nam black and white pepper were reported stable with an average of USD 1,592 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,134 per Mt for white pepper. Sri Lanka black pepper had finally been traded positively as it recorded an increase of 1% as compared to the previous week at an average of USD 2,932 per Mt.
International market showed a rather stable outlook as only India recorded an increase. India was reported trading its Malabar black pepper internationally with the same increase of 2% as compared to the previous week at an average of USD 4,748 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported stable with an average of USD 2,169 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,731 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysia black and white pepper continued to be traded stable and unchanged. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l, 550 g/l and Viet Nam white pepper were also reported stable at an average of USD 1,897 per Mt, USD 1,997 per Mt and USD 2,997 per Mt respectively.
China market continued to be reported inactive as no business took place due to the outbreak of Corona Virus.
EXPORT OF PEPPER OIL FROM INDIA
Pepper oil or Pepper essential oil is a natural blend of mainly terpenes and their derivatives that form a clear yellowish green to bluish green color. It is responsible for the characteristic aroma of pepper. Today, this essential oil is commercially extracted from the pepper berries mainly by the process of steam distillation.
Pepper oil is one of India's added values of pepper product. As the top producers of pepper oil, in 2017 India exported a total 93,357 Kg of pepper oil. India on average exported a total of 7,780 Kg per month which peaked in December with 14,155 Kg. The total revenue of India's export of pepper oil in 2017 was reported to be as high as USD 6.1 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper oil exported by India at USD 67 per Kg. The highest export price of pepper oil from India in 2017 was recorded in May with USD 86 per Kg whilst the lowest price was recorded in November with USD 54 per Kg.
Year 2018 saw an increase in term of quantity of pepper oil exported by India. India was reported to have exported a total of 97,567 Kg, recording an increase of 5% when compared with 2017. The average export of pepper oil by India in 2018 was reported to be 8,131 Kg per month which peaked in June with 10,253 Kg. Although increasing in terms of quantity, India's revenue from pepper oil export was reported to have declined by 19% to a total of USD 4.9 Million as compared to the previous year. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper oil exported by India at USD 51 per Kg or a decrease by 23% as compared with 2017. The highest export price of pepper oil from India in 2018 was recorded in January with USD 60 per Kg whilst the lowest price was recorded in September with USD 44 per Kg.
In 2019, India was reported to have exported a total of 114,880 Kg of pepper oil. Thus, recording an increase of 18% when compared to 2018. In 2019, the total revenue of pepper oil export by India was reported to have reached USD 4.9 Million, recording a slight increase by USD 22,000 as compared to 2018. The average price of the total pepper oil exported by India in 2019 was reported at USD 43 per Kg, recording a decrease of 16% as compared to 2018 with the highest export price of pepper oil recorded in March with USD 52 per Kg whilst the lowest price was recorded in December with USD 38 per Kg.
Pepper oil from India is widely traded in America, European Countries and Asia. In 2019, India's top 5 Country of destinations for its pepper oil were reported to be United States of America with 25,416 Kg (an increase of 36% as compared with 2018), Germany with 14,801 Kg (an increase of 22%), Netherlands with 7,380 Kg (an increase of 2%), United Kingdom with 6,781 Kg (an increase of 18%) and France with 6,120 Kg (a decrease of 44%).
