WPB Week #35/15, 31 August - 4 September 2015
Pepper harvest in Indonesia is almost completed. Arrival however remained slow, as farmers are not eagerly selling their product. Output of this year harvest in Indonesia is higher than the previous year. However, hot weather is currently an issue which potential to influence pepper production, particularly in Bangka. Many young pepper plants are reported wilting. In Lampung, local price of black pepper stand at the level of IDR 120,000 throughout the week, higher than the price prevailed last week. In Bangka the local price of white pepper increased marginally by IDR 2,000 per Kg to IDR 177,000 this week.
In India, Malabar black increased from INR 640 per Kg at the beginning of the week to INR 643 at the week's close. Similarly FOB price also increased by US$ 200 per MT to US$ 10,010.
In Vietnam buying interest is reportedly increasing. Since major portion of supply from this year harvest has deflated, the situation has pushed the price to the upward trend. Local price of Vietnamese pepper stood at VND 202,000 and VND 265,000 per Kg respectively for black and white pepper, recording an increase by 2% for black and marginally for white pepper. In Sarawak, the local price also increased by MYR 1.- for black and white pepper.
EXPORT OF PEPPER FROM MALAYSIA:
It was reported that production and export of pepper from Malaysia is estimated to slightly increase this year. However, up to June (January- June 2015) total export of pepper from Malaysia was only 4,775 Mt or decreased by 22% when compared to export of 6,148 Mt achieved in the same period last year. It is interesting to note that exports in the first four months of this year were small. This was due to limited carry-over stocks from last year harvest. In May and June, the export has shown an increase, sourced from this year harvest. It is expected that export of pepper to remain good in the remaining months of this year to achieve its target of higher export this year.
