IMPORT OF PEPPER BY THE UNITED STATES
During 2011, the United States imported 68,489 mt, comprising 50,181 mt of black, 6,030 mt of white and 12,278 mt of ground pepper, as against 70,649 mt in 2010, recording a decrease of 3%. During Jan - Sep. 2012, total import of pepper into the United States was 41,923 mt, as against 52,489 mt imported in the same period last year. Import of black pepper decreased significantly by 26%. Import of white pepper also decreased at smaller rate, while for ground pepper increased marginally.

Indonesia remained the major supplier of black and white pepper to the US market. During the first nine months Indonesia shipped 9,756 mt (34%) of black pepper, followed by Vietnam (7,064 mt), Brazil (6,365 mt) and India (4,889 mt). Indonesia was also the largest supplier for white pepper, contributing 2,928 mt (73%) to the US-s import. In the case of ground pepper, India was the main source, supplying 4,275 mt (47%) to the US-s imports followed by Vietnam 2,480 mt (27%). During January - September 2012, the United States exported 4,354 mt of pepper. Out of this 4,354 mt was ground pepper.
