MARKET REPORT
Market this week was reported with a positive outlook as only China was reported stable. In local market, Malabar black pepper was reported with an increase of 2% when compared to the previous week at an average of USD 4,403 per Mt. Indonesia black and white peppers were reported with an increase of 4% and 3% respectively as compared to the previous week averaging at USD 2,140 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,838 per Mt for white pepper. The increase of Indonesia pepper could be contributed to the strengthening of Indonesian Rupiah against US Dollar (IDR 14,134 @ USD 1), an appreciation by 3% recorded. Malaysia black and white pepper were reported with an increase of 1% respectively when compared to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 2,139 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,596 per Mt for white pepper. Furthermore, Viet Nam black and white pepper were reported with an increase of 6% respectively as opposed to the previous week to an average of USD 2,337 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,210 per Mt for white pepper. Sri Lanka black pepper was reported with an increase of 3% as compared to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 2,982 per Mt. China white pepper was reported stable and unchanged.
International market also showed a positive outlooks as India black pepper was reported with the same increase of 2% when compared to the previous week at an average of USD 4,673 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported with an increase of 4% and 3% respectively as compared to the previous week averaging at USD 2,610 per Mt for black pepper and USD 4,551 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysia black and white pepper were reported stable and unchanged. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l, 550 g/l and Viet Nam white pepper were reported with an increase of 5%, 4% and 3% respectively as opposed to the previous week to an average of USD 2,775 per Mt, USD 2,856 per Mt and USD 4,345 per Mt respectively. China white pepper was reported stable and unchanged internationally.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY BELGIUM
Belgium, officially the Kingdom of Belgium, is a sovereign state in Western Europe. It is bordered by the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France. Belgium actively imports pepper from various pepper producing countries for domestic consumption or for re-export.
In 2018, Belgium was reported to have imported a total 2,224 Mt of pepper which 42% or 938 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper while 58% or 1,286 Mt of it was ground pepper. The average import of pepper by Belgium in 2018 was reported to be 185 Mt per month with the highest quantity recorded in March with 253 Mt. The total expenditure of pepper import by Belgium in 2018 was reported to be as high as USD 16.3 Million, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Belgium at USD 7,583 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 7,167 Per Mt for ground pepper.
Year 2019 saw a decreasing trend in term of quantity of pepper imported by Belgium. Belgium was reported to have imported a total of 1,684 Mt which 34% or 572 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 66% or 1,112 Mt of it was ground pepper. Thus, recording a decrease of 24% when compared to the same period in 2018. The average pepper imported by Belgium in 2019 was reported at 140 Mt per month which peaked in October with 243 Mt. In line with decreasing in term of quantity, Belgium's expenditure of pepper import was reported with a decrease of 25% to a total of USD 12.3 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Belgium at USD 9,410 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 6,246 per Mt for ground pepper or an increase by 24% for whole pepper and a decrease by 13% for ground pepper as compared to 2018.
As of July 2020, Pepper import by Belgium was reported with an increase of 33% as compared to the same period in 2019, totaling at 1,239 Mt which comprised of 30% or 375 Mt of whole pepper and 70% or 863 Mt of ground pepper. The total expenditure of pepper import by Belgium as of July 2020 was reported with an increase of 12% when compared to the same period in the previous year, totaling at USD 7.8 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper imported by Belgium at USD 8,380 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 5,406 per Mt for ground pepper.
The top five countries of origins of Belgium's pepper as of July 2020 were reported to be Netherlands with 519 Mt (an increase of 24% as compared to the same period in 2019), Germany with 149 Mt (an increase of 20%), China with 147 Mt (an increase of 146 Mt), Viet Nam with 86 Mt (an increase of 79%) and Madagascar with 55 Mt (an increase of 22%).
