MARKET REPORT
As most origins' currency weakened against US Dollar, market this week showed a mixed response with a rather negative outlook as only Viet Nam origin recorded an increase. In local market, Malabar black pepper was traded with a 2% deficit as compared to the previous week, averaging at USD 4,372 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported with a 2% deficit respectively when compared to the previous week at an average of USD 1,715 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,073 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysian black and white pepper were also traded domestically with a 2% and 1% deficit respectively as opposed to the previous week, averaging at USD 1,751 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,143 per Mt for white pepper. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper was reported with an increase of 2% as compared to the previous week with an average of USD 1,629 per Mt for black pepper whilst Viet Nam white pepper was reported stable at an average of USD 2,407 per Mt. Sri Lanka black pepper was reported steady at an average of USD 2,929 per Mt.
International market also showed a mixed response as only Viet Nam recorded an increase. India was reported trading its Malabar black pepper internationally with the same a 2% deficit as compared to the previous week at an average of USD 4,651 per Mt. Indonesia black and white pepper were reported with a 2% deficit respectively as compared to the previous week with an average of USD 2,127 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,658 per Mt for white pepper. Malaysia black and white pepper continued to be traded stable and unchanged. Furthermore, despite being in harvest season, Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l, 550 g/l and Viet Nam white pepper were reported with a significant increase of 6%, 5% and 4% respectively as opposed to the previous week at an average of USD 2,005 per Mt, USD 2,105 per Mt and USD 3,105 per Mt respectively.
No new development of China market as it continued to be reported inactive due to the Corona Virus outbreak.
EXPORT OF PEPPER BY THAILAND
Thailand, officially the Kingdom of Thailand and formerly known as Siam, is a country at the center of the Southeast Asian Indochinese peninsula. Thailand is also one of pepper producing country known to have cultivated its pepper partially in southern Thailand and actively export pepper to various countries.
In 2017, Thailand was reported to have exported a total of 278,351 Kg of pepper from which 39% or 108,281 Kg of it comprised of whole pepper and 61% or 170,070 Kg of it ground pepper. Thailand on average exported a total of 23,196 Kg per month in 2017 which peaked in May with 47,743 per Kg. The total revenue of Thailand's export of pepper in 2017 was reported to be as high as USD 1.6 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper exported by Thailand at USD 5.5 per Kg for whole pepper and USD 6.2 per Kg for ground pepper.
Year 2018 saw an increase in term of quantity of pepper exported by Thailand. Thailand was reported to have exported a total of 415,977 Kg of which 17% or 68,912 Kg of it comprised of whole pepper and 83% or 347,065 Kg of it ground pepper, recording an increase of 49% when compared with 2017. The average export of pepper by Thailand in 2018 was reported to be at 34,665 Kg per month which peaked in August with 78,968 per Kg. In accordance with increasing in terms of quantity, Thailand's revenue from pepper export was also reported to have increased by 137% as compared to the previous year to a total of USD 3.9 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper exported by Thailand at USD 14.4 per Kg for whole pepper and USD 8.5 per Kg for ground pepper or an increase by 158% and 36% respectively as compared with 2017.
At the end of 2019, Thailand was reported to have exported a total of 540,417 Kg which 57% or 306,119 Kg of it comprised of whole pepper and 43% or 234,298 Kg of it ground pepper. Thus, recording an increase of 30% when compared to 2018. The average export of pepper by Thailand in 2019 was reported to be at 45,035 Kg per month which peaked in July with 73,559 per Kg. By the end of 2019, the total revenue of pepper export by Thailand was reported to have reached USD 4.8 Million, recording an increase by 22% as compared to 2018. The average price of the total pepper exported by Thailand in 2019 was reported at USD 10.9 per Kg for whole pepper and 6.3 per Kg for ground pepper or a decrease by 24% and 26% respectively as compared with 2018.
Pepper from Thailand is widely traded in Africa, America, Asia, Australia and Europe. In 2019, Thailand's top 5 Country of destinations for its pepper were reported to be South Africa with 236,481 Kg (an increase of 82% as compared to 2018), United States of America with 88,561 Kg (an increase of 22%), Myanmar with 36,113 Kg ( 2018 N.A), New Zealand with 17,243 Kg (an increase of 1%) and China with 17,121 Kg (an increase of 285%).
