MARKET REPORT
Market this week showed a mixed response as only Indonesia black pepper recorded a decrease. In local market, Malabar black pepper was reported with an increase of 1% when compared to previous week at an average of USD 4,283 per Mt. Indonesia black pepper was reported with 2% deficit as compared to the previous week at an average of USD 1,973 per Mt whilst Indonesia white pepper was reported with an increase of 3% when compared to the previous week averaging at USD 3,675 per Mt. The increase of Indonesia white pepper continued to be contributed to the lack of supply whilst demand strong. Malaysia black and white peppers in local market were reported stable with a marginal increase to an average of USD 2,401 per Mt for black pepper and USD 3,775 per Mt for white pepper. Furthermore, Viet Nam black and white peppers were reported stable and unchanged. Sri Lanka black pepper was reported with an increase of 5% as compared to the previous week and was traded at an average of USD 3,069 per Mt. China white pepper was reported stable and unchanged.
International market also showed a mixed response as only Indonesia black pepper recorded a decrease. India black pepper was reported with the same increase of 1% when compared to the previous week at an average of USD 4,552 per Mt. Indonesia black pepper was reported with 2% deficit as opposed to the previous week at an average of USD 2,414 per Mt whilst Indonesia white pepper was reported with an increase of 3% when compared to the previous week averaging at USD 4,319 per Mt. Malaysia black and white pepper continued to be reported stable and unchanged. Furthermore, Viet Nam black pepper 500 g/l, 550 g/l and Viet Nam white pepper were reported stable with a marginal increase averaging at USD 2,480 per Mt, USD 2,561 per Mt and USD 4,000 per Mt respectively. China white pepper was reported stable and unchanged.
EXPORT OF PEPPER BY RUSSIA
Russia, or the Russian Federation, is a transcontinental country located in Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. Furthermore, Russia actively imports pepper from various pepper producing countries for domestic consumption or for re-export.
In 2018, Russia was reported to have imported a total of 8,048 Mt which 91% of it comprised of whole pepper. In the following year, Russia's import of pepper increased by 28%, totaling at 10,306 Mt. As of April 2020, Russia was reported to have imported a total of 3,223 Mt of which 263 Mt went for re-export purposes. The ratio of Russia's import and export during 2018-April 2020 are 13:1, 14:1 and 12:1 respectively. The top five countries of origins of Russia pepper both for whole and ground as of April 2020 were reported to be Viet Nam with 2,131 Mt (Contributed to 66% of the total Russia's import as of April 2020), India with 427 Mt (13%), Indonesia with 291 Mt (9%), Sri Lanka with 154 Mt (5%) and Brazil with 116 Mt (4%).
In 2018, Russia was reported to have exported a total of 633 Mt of pepper which 31% or 199 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 69% or 434 Mt of it ground pepper. Russia on average exported a total of 53 Mt per month in 2018 which peaked in August with 71 Mt. The total revenue of Russia's export of pepper in 2018 was reported to be as high as USD 3.8 Million. Thus, recording the average price of the total pepper exported by Russia at USD 6,589 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 5,878 per Mt for ground pepper.
Year 2019 saw an increase in term of quantity of pepper exported by Russia. Russia was reported to have exported a total of 726 Mt of which 27% or 194 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 73% or 532 Mt of it ground pepper, recording an increase of 15% when compared to 2018. The average export of pepper by Russia in 2019 was reported to be 61 Mt per month which peaked in June with 97 Mt. Although increasing in term of quantity, Russia's revenue from pepper export was reported with a decrease of 2% as compared to the previous year to a total of USD 3.7 Million. Thus, recording an average price of the total pepper exported by Russia at USD 5,705 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 5,011 per Mt for ground pepper or a decrease of 13% and 15% respectively as compared to 2018.
As of April 2020, Russia was reported to have exported a total of 263 Mt which 18% or 49 Mt of it comprised of whole pepper and 82% or 215 Mt of it ground pepper. Thus, recording an increase of 50% when compared to the same period in 2019. As of April 2020, the total revenue of pepper export by Russia was reported to have reached USD 1.2 Million, recording an increase of 10% as compared to the same period in 2019. The average price of the total pepper exported by Russia as of April 2020 was reported at USD 5,588 per Mt for whole pepper and USD 4,567 per Mt for ground pepper.
Pepper from Russia is traded worldwide. As of April 2020, Russia's top 5 Country of destinations for its pepper were reported to be Kazakhstan with 118 Mt (an increase of 94% as compared to the same period in 2019), Belarus with 66 Mt (an increase of 27%), Ukraine with 50 Mt (an increase of 33%), Azerbaijan with 7 Mt (a decrease of 18%) and Kyrgyzstan with 6 Mt (an increase of 18%).
