BLACK PEPPER: In 2012 pepper market was considered to be a good year for the pepper farmers/ producers as prices prevailing during the year fluctuated at the high level. In December the market was calm in view of Christmas and New Year holidays. Entering 2013, market showed a mixed response. In India, although pepper harvest is in upswing, price has increased by 1%. New material from current crop is expected to arrive into market soon. Trading at the Commodity Exchange was still limited and futures prices for Feb contract up by 1% while April decreased by -1%. In Sri Lanka the price also decreased; while in Sarawak the price in local market increased marginally. In Lampung, the price was relatively stable with limited activity. In Vietnam, local price of black decreased by -1%.
WHITE PEPPER: The market for white pepper was more dynamic. In Bangka and Sarawak, local prices increased by 1% both in local as well as fob. Local prices of white pepper at other source, Vietnam was stable.
