Approaching the year-end long holiday season market of pepper tends to be quiet and showed a mixed response. In India pepper harvest is now in a full swing, but price increased further. In Lampung, local price of black pepper decreased by IDR 2,000 to IDR 42,000 per Kg this week. A marginal decrease of 1% was also recorded in Sri Lanka and China. In Sarawak and Bangka the price remained stable as last week.
Trade source reported that FOB price of Brazilian ASTA black was US$ 3,600 per MT and US$ 3,500 and US$ 3,400 for B1 and B2 respectively. In Viet Nam, FOB price of ASTA 500 g/l black was US$ 3,650 per MT and US$ 5,750 for white respectively.
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY THE NETHERLANDS
Import of pepper into the Netherlands decreased continuously in the last five years. In 2016 import of pepper into the Netherlands was 12,400 Mt as against 13,600 Mt in 2015. This also showed a significant decrease when compared with import of 17,000 Mt in 2012. Role of the Netherlands as main trading country in Europe decrease year by year. High price prevailed in the last five years has encouraged traders shipped material directly from sources to users (consuming countries). In 2017, import of pepper by the Netherland is estimated to increase as indicated by import performance during the first nine months of 2017. During January - September 2017 the Netherlands imported 9,400 Mt, recording an increase of 4% from 9,000 Mt in the same period last year. Viet Nam was the main source of pepper into the Netherlands to supply about 47%, followed by Indonesia, Brazil and India.
