WPB Week #04/14, 20 - 24 January 2014
In response to the current harvest in Vietnam, the market for pepper has reacted and lower price has been recorded. In the last IPC Session, it was reported that production of pepper in Vietnam in 2014 would be more or less similar with the level achieved in 2013. To meet overseas demand, Vietnam has also entered some quantity of pepper from Cambodia. Although production of pepper in Indonesia is estimated to be slightly better this year, global supply is estimated to remain tight. India is not making any impact in the export market, since its lower production will be fully absorbed for domestic consumption. Vietnam remains the sole supplier from Jan till Indonesia-s crop arrives in July/August. Malaysia will supply to Japan, Australia and New Zealand and will not disturb much the other markets. Brazil is already sold out their 2013 crop. They will re-appear only in Oct. 2014. Hence, the market will depend on Vietnam for supply of pepper from now on wards till July/August. When all demand comes to Vietnam, naturally the prices will not come down further
IMPORT OF PEPPER BY JAPAN:
Import of pepper into Japan was relatively stable at around 8-9,000 mt annually during the last decade. Out of which around 60% was whole pepper and 40% was ground pepper. Malaysia was the main source of whole pepper for Japan, supplying around 66%, followed by Indonesia 14% and India 13%. In respect of ground pepper however, Indonesia was the main source, supplying 65%, followed by Malaysia 25%.
