KOTA SAMARAHAN (Jan 15): Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Pepper Community (IPC) to foster collaboration in education, research and industry engagement, particularly in the global pepper industry.
The MoU was inked in a ceremony at Unimas yesterday, and will cover a three-year period in which the partnership between the Unimas Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) and IPC aims to promote cooperation in areas such as joint research, educational programmes, internships and consultancy projects.
“The agreement also highlights opportunities for knowledge sharing, professional development for students, and collaboration with industry experts to address challenges in the global pepper market,†said the event organiser.
The MoU was signed by Unimas vice chancellor Prof Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit and IPC executive director Firna Azura Ekaputri Marzuki, in the presence of leaders and faculty members from both organisations.
Firna Azura expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating that the MoU marks a significant step for Unimas and IPC.
“It builds on our shared vision for strategic partnerships, fostering development in education, research, and the global pepper industry. Together, we can address future challenges and unlock new opportunities,†said Firna.
She emphasised the IPC’s evolution as an international organisation under the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN-ESCAP) since its establishment in 1972.
With a growing membership, the IPC continues to serve as a force for sustainability and innovation in the pepper industry.
“This partnership aims to leverage the strengths of Unimas in academic excellence and IPC’s industry expertise to create a synergistic relationship,†she said.
Apart from that, the collaborative efforts will include inviting international industry players for seminars, conducting joint research on pressing issues in the pepper sector, and enhancing the employability of graduates through tailored training programmes.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Hata highlighted that the MoU reflects Unimas’ commitment to fostering global partnerships and dedication to academic excellence and industry collaboration.
“By working with IPC, we aim to create impactful research and equip our students with the skills needed to excel in the global market,†he said.
Both parties expressed hope that the partnership would lead to innovative solutions and strengthen ties between academia and industry for years to come, with optimism about the potential impact of this collaboration on the global pepper industry and the academic community.
