European Union Issued Regulation on the Non-Renewed Approval of Chlorpyrifos and Chlorpyrifos-methyl
Through its Official Journal of the European Union, European Union Commission has published Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/17 and EU 2020/18 concerning the non-renewal of the approval of the active substance chlorpyrifos-methyl and chlorpyrifos respectively as both substances were unable to meet the approval criteria applicable to human health as laid down in Article 4 of Regulation (EC) No. 1107/2009.
The two Commission Implementing Regulations which was published on 13 January 2020, stipulated the following articles:
Article 1
Non-renewal of the approval of the active substances
The approval of the active substances of chlorpyrifos-methyl (and chlorpyrifos) is not renewed
Article 2
Amendment to the Implementing Regulation (EU) No. 540/2011
In Part A of the Annex to Implementing Regulation (EU) No 540/2011, row 112, on chlorpyrifos-methyl, (and row 111, on chlorpyrifos) is deleted.
Article 3
Transitional measures
Member States shall withdraw authorisations for plant protection products containing chlorpyrifos-methyl (and chlorpyrifos) as an active substance by 16 February 2020.
Article 4
Grace period
Any grace period granted by Member States in accordance with Article 46 of Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009 shall expire by 16 April 2020.
Article 5
Entry into force
This Regulation shall enter into force on the third day following that of its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
This Regulation shall be binding in its entirety and directly applicable in all Member States.

Following the non-renewal of the authorization of active substances chlorpyrifos-methyl and chlorpyrifos which would end on 31 January 2020, the Maximum Residue Level (MRLs) will be lowered to 0.01 mg/kg.
Pepper shipment to European countries would have to adhere to this new requirement and both aforementioned active substances should be included in pesticide monitoring process and proven by Certificate of Analysis.
